The new craze to sweep America (it had to be their) is birth photography. Pregnant mothers hire professional photographers to be present at the birth of their child. Would you do it? I’m sure a lot of people would be quite skeptical to get it done as its impersonal, but remember you will have several meetings with the photographer to get to know them.
Personally, I don’t think I would do it in the sense of not knowing the photographer. I would of probably felt some pressure not to scream or shout if a ‘stranger’ was in the room, I would feel a little uncomfortable. I would however like pictures to be taken. When I gave birth I was in a ‘zone’ that I can’t remember most of my labour and birthing experience! Therefore, I do wish my friend or father of my son did take some snaps to show me and that I could look back on.
The gorgeous TV Presenter and Mum of two, Nadia Sawalha, speaking on the TV show Lorraine, said she had birth photography done and now her 4 year old daughter loved looking at the pictures and was excited to see both her Mum and Dad in the pics.
90% of Lorraine viewers said they would not want a professional photographer at the birth of their child.
Why you should do birth photography
- Giving birth is a once (or twice) in a lifetime experience for many people so it makes sense to hire a birth photographer. We take pictures at our weddings so why not at the most magical moment of your life – your child being born?
- Memories – we can all remember bits and bobs from our birthing experience but wouldn’t it be interesting to actually see what it all looked like throughout the WHOLE of your childs birth.
- If your not comfortable with hiring a birth photographer who in theory is still a ‘stranger’ even if you do meet them prior to your birth, you could give this special job to a designated person.
