Right back to basics – 3 PR tips to remember

1) Always remember why you are doing PR in the first place. Most small businesses are doing it for brand awareness.

2) Who are you trying to reach and how will you reach them?

3) What problem of your target customer are you solving?

Don’t forget to….BUILD YOUR DATABASE

Idea – If your business is aimed at parents, then buy every parenting magazine and email the editors. Find out the top 100 parenting blogs and send them samples of your product in return for a review.

Keep an excel spreadsheet with a list of all your contacts and companies they work for.

PR TIPS – STEP BY STEP

If you run a cake shop it’s your lucky day – we are using you as an example. Actually every episode is your lucky day as I always use a cake shop as an example!!

Please let me know what business you run in the comments below so I can use you as an example next time 🙂 xx

PR TIP 1 – WHAT IS YOUR STORY?

Your cake shop in York is running a free mother and daughter baking day event for Mothers days

PR TIP 2 – CHOSE YOUR TOOL TO GET YOUR STORY OUT THERE

– Put together a press release for your event

– Pitch your mothers day story to the media

– Guest blog on relevant sites with a recipe for the ultimate mothers day cake

PR TIP 3 – FIND THE RIGHT CONTACTS

Your cake shop is in York so start local.  Contact reporters of newspapers in the local press, BBC York, local blogs

PR TIP 4 – GET IN CONTACT AT THE RIGHT TIME

Local and national press will be planning mothers day features well in advance. If you want to get featured in a monthly magazine – you will need to contact them in January for a mothers day feature in March.

PR TIP 5 – BE RESPONSIVE & GIVE THEM WHAT THEY NEED

HIGH FIVES! The local newspaper want to feature your baking event!

Invite them to the event and give them free cake (when I worked on the radio and music artists gave me free CDs, it would make me warm to them even more – fickle isn’t it? Just give them loads of free cake – they will love it!)

Also make sure you have lots of nice pictures of your cakes that the journalists can use

Follow these 5 steps and you stand a pretty good chance of getting featured
BUT this is Mum to Millionaire so let’s be honest….

REMEMBER journalists, producers, editors, receive hundreds of emails from businesses every week – You may not even get an email back until the 18th person you contact.

Last year I was featured in my local press for something I was doing in my media, presenting life – but they haven’t responded to my emails for Mum to Millionaire. Yes it’s frustrating but I just have to keep trying different angles.

If you don’t get a response –  make your story stronger, write a better press release OR maybe your email just hit their inbox at the wrong time when some breaking news was happening!

There are so many reasons why people don’t get back to you – Don’t get disheartened just keep trying

THANK YOU so much to Melissa for her fascinating insight into the newspaper world and all her pr tips. Have you managed to get your business any PR? Please let us know in the comments below so we can all learn from each other xx
