#15 The right way to build your team
Sick of your life? Hate your job? Then take a calculated risk….
That’s what my amazing guest did. Lucy Chamberlain is a Mum of 1, Step Mum to 2 and CEO of C & C Search – an all female recruitment firm in London.
In the space of 12 months, Lucy launched her business, hired other incredible women and built a strong team. She has GOOGLE as one of her clients AND gives 10% of her earnings to charity – I LOVE THIS so much that I want to cry!
If you’re planning on hiring a small team then this podcast will be invaluable to you. Not only that, we talk about all those things us Business Mums go through – I think you’ll really enjoy this
IN THE EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN
- How to take a calculated risk
- Why you need that one friend that will tell you the truth!
- The importance of having a clear vision for your team
- How to attract the right people to your start up
- What the core quality is for a start up to be successful
- Questions to ask when you are interviewing a potential employee
THE RIGHT WAY TO BUILD YOUR TEAM
ONE WOMAN BUSINESS
If your business is just you then seek out experts and network with people in your community. Create a team of like minded business people that you can meet up with and discuss ideas. This will stop you feeling isolated.
CLEAR VISION
Be very clear about what you want your team to look like and how many members of staff you will have by the end of the year.
STRUCTURE & AFFORDABILITY
What salary will the members of your team be on? What will their background be? Write down your ‘ideal’ team member
ATTRACTING & RETAINING TALENT TO YOUR START UP
Have a list of your businesses core values. Lucys’s are – Knowledge, Investment, Integrity and Effectiveness
You need to make sure the people coming into your business are going to protect your core values and be committed to them.
Reward, Regonition and include all members of your staff
BUILD A HAPPY & COMMITTED TEAM
Lucy gives 150% to her team and expects 100% back. Always say thank you and treat your team to nice meals or gifts – the little things will really make a difference to employee morale
If finances are tight – you could simply invite your team home and cook them a nice meal
VOLUNTEER
Let your team members volunteer so they feel completely fulfilled on a holistic level. This could be letting them go and mentor or help at a charity for a few hours a month.
FEEDBACK
Encourage your team to talk to you and each other – be honest and open and always communicate, you will gain better long term commitment from it.
FLAT STRUCTURE
Even though you own the company – you want to promote a ‘us’ rather than ‘me’ and ‘them’
Sit in the office together rather than sitting away from your team and encourage everyone to be open
DREAMS WILL COME TRUE
THANK YOU to Lucy for all her motivation and tips to building a strong, loyal team. She’s a shining inspiration to us and proves with hard work and having a very clear vision you WILL make it. You have to go through the pain of making no money, working around the clock but stay dedicated.
